Job Title: Electrical Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Engineer
Location: Houston, TX
Travel: Up to 10% (primarily U.S. locations)
We are looking for an experienced Electrical Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Engineer to lead grid interconnection efforts and provide technical expertise in the planning and analysis of substations and transmission/distribution systems. This role is vital to ensuring the successful integration of natural gas generation sites, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and other energy infrastructure projects.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in T&D system design, utility interconnection processes, power flow analysis, and regulatory compliance—ensuring that each project aligns with technical, economic, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the end-to-end grid interconnection process from feasibility studies through to final approval.
- Prepare and submit interconnection applications, ensuring all documentation complies with utility and regulatory standards.
- Develop technical drawings and documentation including single line diagrams, general arrangements, FEED studies, and equipment specifications.
- Engage directly with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and regulatory agencies to support project approvals and timely execution.
- Interpret and analyze interconnection queue data, study results, and agreements to drive schedule and cost optimization.
- Assess substation configurations, equipment capabilities, and protection schemes for grid integration viability.
- Identify transmission constraints and determine necessary system upgrades or reinforcements for successful interconnection.
- Collaborate with internal engineering teams, developers, and regulatory specialists to align technical and business objectives.
- Support feasibility and economic assessments by analyzing tariffs, congestion risks, and system capacity availability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in T&D engineering, transmission planning, or power system studies.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in power engineering or progress toward licensure preferred.
- Solid understanding of ISO/RTO interconnection processes, including Feasibility, System Impact, and Facilities Studies.
- Prior experience working with utilities, developers, or energy consultants.
- Familiarity with power system modeling and simulation software such as PSSE, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or ETAP.
- Knowledge of NERC, FERC, IEEE 1547, and relevant utility standards.
- Understanding of transmission line and substation design, including transformers, switchgear, breakers, and protective relays.
- Exposure to DER integration, microgrids, and distribution planning is a plus.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple interconnections simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with stakeholders and presenting technical insights.
- Self-driven, detail-oriented, and proactive in identifying and resolving engineering and regulatory challenges.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
