Field Electrical Engineer
Location: Chatham, Virginia
Duration: 12+ Month Contract
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM (occasional overtime as needed)
Per Diem: Available
We are seeking an experienced Field Electrical Engineer to support the construction and commissioning of a large industrial energy facility. This is a fully on-site position focused on field execution, electrical integration, commissioning support, and technical issue resolution throughout construction.
This is not a design engineering role. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical construction within the oil & gas industry (or a comparable industrial process environment such as chemical or petrochemical facilities) and be comfortable working directly with construction teams, vendors, and project leadership to support successful project execution.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the on-site electrical engineering resource supporting construction activities throughout the project.
- Provide field support to ensure electrical installations are completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, vendor documentation, and applicable electrical codes.
- Support installation and integration of Electric Motor Drive (EMD) systems, including coordination of electrical interfaces, power distribution, and control systems.
- Review and respond to RFIs, field issues, and technical questions while coordinating with engineering teams to resolve construction challenges.
- Verify proper installation of switchgear, MCCs, electrical equipment, grounding systems, cable tray, lighting, and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Support temporary power systems and on-site power generation during construction, including tie-ins, grounding, and energization activities.
- Monitor electrical work for code compliance, constructability, quality, and safety throughout installation.
- Maintain electrical redlines, as-built documentation, punch lists, testing records, and turnover documentation.
- Coordinate closely with construction management, inspectors, contractors, vendors, and commissioning teams to support project milestones.
- Identify potential schedule impacts, constructability concerns, and electrical issues early to minimize delays and rework.
- Assist with commissioning activities, electrical testing, system readiness, and final project turnover.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience supporting electrical construction on industrial, energy, or heavy process facilities.
- Strong background in the oil & gas industry is required. Candidates from similar industrial environments such as chemical, petrochemical, or process manufacturing may also be considered.
- Experience supporting Electric Motor Drive (EMD) systems or other large rotating equipment.
- Experience supporting commissioning activities for high-voltage electrical systems.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and its application in field construction.
- Experience managing RFIs, field engineering issues, redlines, punch lists, and turnover documentation.
- Familiarity with switchgear, MCCs, generators, grounding systems, protection systems, and power distribution.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively alongside construction teams, engineers, contractors, and project leadership.
Preferred Experience
- Industrial compressor stations or similar heavy industrial facilities.
- Temporary power or on-site power generation systems.
- Owner's representative or field engineering experience during construction.
- Fast-paced projects with overlapping construction and commissioning activities.
What You'll Bring
- Strong field presence with the ability to solve problems in real time.
- Practical understanding of electrical construction methods and commissioning.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and schedule.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating across multiple disciplines in a dynamic construction environment.
